A Podiatrist's Perspective...
Socks are a seemingly simple part of our daily wardrobe, but they play a significant role in foot health. As a podiatrist, I often get asked, "Are socks good for your feet?" The answer is a resounding yes, but with a few caveats.

Benefits of Wearing Socks
Skin protection: Socks act as a barrier between your feet and shoes, reducing friction and preventing blisters.
Moisture control: Your feet contain over 250,000 sweat glands that produce about half a pint of moisture each day. Socks absorb this sweat, preventing your feet from becoming wet and slippery inside your shoes. By keeping your feet dry socks reduce the risk of fungal infections like athlete's foot. Bamboo socks are particularly good at wicking moisture away from the skin also allowing it to evaporate rather than lingering and causing a soggy sock!
Shoe protection: If you don't wear socks, sweat (and dirt) builds up in shoes and can cause stinky footwear.
Warmth: Socks provide insulation, keeping your feet warm in cold weather. This is particularly important if you get chilblains, have Raynauds or have poor circulation.
Comfort: Socks can add cushioning and support, making shoes more comfortable.
Choosing the Right Socks
Not all socks are created equal. The type of sock you choose can impact your foot health. Here are some factors to consider:
Material: Look for socks made from breathable materials like bamboo. These materials wick away moisture and help keep your feet dry.
Fit: Choose socks that fit snugly but not too tight. Tight socks can restrict circulation, while loose socks can bunch up and cause blisters. Gentlegrip or soft top socks are useful if you find socks are too tight around the ankles
Activity: Consider the activity you'll be doing when choosing socks. For example, athletic socks are designed to provide extra support and cushioning for high-impact activities. Socks designed to be worn in safety footwear generally have extra features such as reinforced heels and toes.
Seams: Socks often have thick seams across the toes which can rub and cause discomfort. Look for socks with Smooth Toe Seams for a seamless finish to minimise irritation and chaffing

Final Thoughts
Always wear socks with shoes. Socks are an essential part of foot care. They provide protection, moisture control, warmth, and comfort. By choosing the right socks and wearing them appropriately, you can help keep your feet healthy and happy.
